Statistics About Domestic Violence

Domestic violence is a family concern. Studies show that:

  • Girls raised in violent homes are at a higher risk of becoming victims as adults.
  • Boys raised in violent environments are at a higher risk of becoming batterers as adults.
  • National surveys indicate that one out of every seven women reports she has been physically abused by a husband or boyfriend at some point in her life.
  • While there are exceptions, intimate partner violence is primarily a crime of men against women.
  • Women of all races, cultures and economic status are equally vulnerable to violence by an intimate partner.
  • Approximately one in four female high school students reports being physically and/or sexually abused by a dating partner.
  • Eight percent of high school-age girls said “yes” when asked if “a boyfriend or date has ever forced sex against your will.”
  • One out of every six adult women in Oregon has been the victim of forcible rape some time during her life.
  • Marital rape accounts for 25 percent of all rapes, affecting more than 75,000 women each year.
