Sexual Violence

If you have just been assaulted, seek medical attention immediately. Do not shower or change your clothes. You may have hidden injuries, or want to explore options for preventing pregnancy or sexually transmitted diseases. Find a safe environment — anywhere away from the attacker. Go to the nearest hospital or police station, or ask a trusted friend to stay with you for moral support.

If you are the victim of a sexual assault, know that what happened is not your fault. It is never too late to seek help. Even if the sexual assault took place years ago, you will benefit from dealing with your fears and emotions in order to heal and regain a sense of control over your life. HAVEN advocates have specific training on sexual assault and can help with all the feelings you may have, including anger, fear or denial.
